Dell G3 3779 Gaming Laptop Review 17 VGA Screen Separated GTX1050Ti New Wind

The Dell G3 3779 offers a budget gaming laptop. We carefully reviewed the cheapest Dell laptops with Coffee Lake CPUs and mid-range GPUs.

The Dell G3 17 is mostly made of plastic and therefore doesn't have a high-quality look. The Dell G3 17 also doesn't offer anything striking in terms of looks, such as the Dell G5 15. The workmanship is very good and we have nothing to complain about, since the headroom is even overall and we couldn't find any sharp edges in our test device. The G3 17's color palette is rather limited in black and gray with a few blue accents. The matte black display lid makes an impression quickly, as fingerprints are immediately visible on this surface. In terms of stability, have many 17-inchers have some problems due to their size. This is also the case with the Dell G3 17, the socket shows good pressure resistance, but can twist relatively easily. The screen cover is robust and can only be easily twisted with a little effort.

Dell G3 17"

The ports on offer are quite limited for a 17-inch notebook. Of the three built-in USB ports, only two are 3.1 specs, and the USB port next to the memory card reader on the right only offers 2.0 speeds. On the left, Our Dell G3 17 test model also offers an HDMI 2.0 port and a network port, where most connections are located.

Dell only advertises an optional onboard Thunderbolt port on Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti-equipped configurations and higher. We don't understand why this feature isn't available for entry-level users. Port placement is good with enough space between them.

SD card reader

The Dell G3 17 3779 is equipped with an SD card reader, which is placed on the right edge and can process all common memory cards. Tests show that the card reader unfortunately only runs at USB 2.0 speed.

keyboard

The Dell G3 17 3779 has a six-row chiclet keyboard whose white lettering harmonizes with the device. The keys are slightly recessed on the underside so that the keyboard is at the same height as the palm rest. The keyboard is splash-proof and has a two-stage Equipped with backlight.

The keys are not big at 15 x 15 mm, but big enough. The keys on the number pad are less than a millimeter in size. The arrow keys take some getting used to at first, as they are much smaller. The tapping noise is pleasantly quiet and not annoying. Only the space bar noticeable when typing fast. The stroke was relatively short and the pressure point was noticeable, but could have been sharper.

touchpad

At 10.5 x 8.1 cm, the touchpad is the same size as the Dell G5 15. It is optically highlighted by a blue border. The input area is large enough for multi-touch inputs, but there is still enough for a larger ClickPad Space. The slightly rough surface is pleasant to the touch, but you may have slight problems with the gliding properties with wet fingers. We also found that some areas in the four corners of our test device did not work properly.

Two input keys are integrated in the lower area. We only see an optical dividing line on the input surface. The way is short and the input is rewarded with what we think is a clear and too loud clicking noise. Since it is a gaming device, we mainly use it uses an external mouse, so that the clickpad sufficiently fulfills its purpose as a normal mouse replacement.

Screen

Display - There are no alternatives in screen selection

Our Dell G3 17 3779 is equipped with a 17-inch IPS panel from AU Optronics. 1920x1080 pixels with this display size results in a pixel density of 127 ppi. Unfortunately, there is no replacement monitor like the 4K panel or G-Sync support.

Dell has equipped the G3 17 3779 with a small SSD (128 GB) and a normal hard drive (1 TB) for various games. If you don't want to do without a six-core processor, you can also buy a Dell G3 17 with an Intel Core i7-8750H. However, since many games don't fully utilize the core count, the advantage of the i5-8300H is not necessarily a purchase criterion. Investing in a better GPU might make more sense, even if a Core i7-8750H is still included. That means the Dell G3 is 17 also available with GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

storage solution

SSD M.2 with 128GB storage

2.5" 1TB Hard Drive . Storage

For storage, our Dell G3 17 3779 review unit offers a 128GB SSD and a regular 1TB Western Digital hard drive. SK Hynix SSDs run at SATA speeds, much faster than regular hard drives, but still significantly underperforming from NVMe-capable SSDs.

graphic card

With the Intel UHD Graphics 630, the Dell G3 17 3779 offers a power-saving solution that processes monitor outputs for 2D operation and relieves the processor when playing high-resolution videos thanks to the integrated hardware codec.

For 3D applications it is routed to the dedicated graphics card via Nvidia Optimus and then the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 takes over the graphics calculation. The GeForce GTX 1050 has its own 4 GB GDDR5 VRAM and a clock rate of 1354 - 1493 MHz in boost mode. In synthetic benchmarks, our test device performs well below expectations and is below devices with a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

temperature

So far, the benchmarks on the Dell G3 17 3779 have not shown any noteworthy heating problems. However, the measured case temperatures speak for themselves. In idle mode, the case temperature averages almost 30°C and even increases by only 10°C (50°F) under load. However, some individual hotspots get significantly hotter and reach them in our comparison an annoying maximum value of 60.5°C (141°F). The Dell G3 17 3779 should not be used on the lap during load, as it can quickly become uncomfortable over time.

During an hour-long load test, during which we mishandled the device by running the Prime95 and FurMark programs simultaneously, the processor heats up to 95 °C and the graphics processor heats up to 95 °C. Heats up to 83 °C (181 °F). Although the thermal throttling bothers the processor, it was able to maintain a surprisingly good clock of 3.2 GHz (base clock: 2.3 GHz) during the load test. With the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 we could not determine any signs of thermal throttling. The 3DMark11 test that was carried out immediately afterwards also showed a constant load without any negative effects on the performance.

battery life

56Wh battery

In terms of battery life, the Dell G3 17 3779 makes a surprisingly good impression. The built-in 56 Wh battery offers the same capacity as the Dell G5 15 558
