Product ReviewI want to give you my honest opinion of the product in hopes of helping you with your purchase.I'm an average Joe and I have nothing to gain from this review other than a place to voice my thoughts. My previous laptop specs were a Toshiba 2.1GHz, 4GB RAM and 500GB HDD. I bought it in 2013. I spent maybe $350 on it at the time. Years of use had slowed it down and the fan had gotten noisy. It still works and did its job, but it was time to upgrade and move on. I chose this HP product to spend a little more to double my RAM. Now in 2009 I had problems with HP with a motherboard crash 1 month after the warranty expired. I learned my lesson, never again a laptop over $500 to buy. This experience made me hesitant to purchase this product. I haven't found a better buy for the price for the sleek design, variety of devices and comparably - I took the plunge. Before I go any further, you should know that I will be using my product for business purposes over the web and casual gaming. Couldn't tell you much about having multiple apps open at the same time as that could require heavy usage (e.g. Quick-Books, Excel, Adobe Editor, Pro tools, streaming services and a game etc. etc.). If you're pushing that many things at once, maybe it's time to have some CPUs. The first thing I noticed was that the product was made in China and sent in for an overhaul by a gentleman in Kentucky. The refurbished venture was a shot, but these days you get a pretty advanced package for the price. About the exterior: It's beautiful. Has a well-designed and put together frame. F1-F12 keys are easy to use to adjust the brightness or change the volume quickly. The only problem I have is the arrow keys up and down are small. In an effort to have a slim design they have minimized the up and down button area. I have average male hands so it takes some time to get used to. The outside of the laptop smudges easily with your naturally oily fingers. Must pick up a $20 peripheral case to compensate and not look like the rag-o-muffin at the coffee shop. Everything else is as you'd expect from a laptop. Touch screen is great for apps/games like Hearth-Stone, exhaust fan and power cord connection are reasonable. The charging cable has a 3-pin wall inlet Prefer input as extension cords are strategically placed near my couch but hey I'll upgrade and deal with it. It's nice to have two USBs on opposite sides of the laptop - one on the right side and two on the left. Although your computer has Bluetooth functionality, it also helps to have a headphone jack. Luckily good guy HP included one. (*cough* Apple Iphone 7 failed) Since the laptop has a sturdy but lightweight compact ruffle, you can hear a bit of the innards. The processor has a slight "thinking" noise. The fan is quiet and unobtrusive. When I'm recording voiceovers, I find the audio isn't loud enough to be distracting. The fan is on the side of the product also helps keep things cool when it's on your lap. The display is beautiful and feels premium. Colors are crisp and the frame of the screen is reasonable. When going from a dark to a bright screen, there is a slight adjustment time to assign the brightness. Nothing really to complain about, just something else. (Probably it adjusts from dark to light pixels so as not to shock or hurt your eyes. Don't know if you can turn this on or off, but really, nothing to complain about). Turn it on - What's up?Initial setup takes about 30 minutes with an internet connection. It will download a 4-6GB WIndows 10 update in the background once it boots up. I'd say it takes 15 seconds to get to the Windows 10 login screen, 15 more seconds to fully boot up, and it's functional with everything up and running in a total of 45 seconds. Toshiba is notorious for putting too much crap on your computer toss that you'll never need. Luckily, HP gives you the pork and beans with this product. Also, I made custom settings during Windows 10 setup to turn off minor annoyances like Cortana or notifications. The only thing I would have wished for was a better notepad application. I ended up downloading Google Docs straight to my computer, so now I have a word pad app. I downloaded Audacity to get an idea of the quality of the built-in mic. I noticed that the app runs very smoothly. It's easy to get in and out of, and I had Hearth-Stone running at the same time. Multitasking on this one computers are nice. The onboard mic is average. It gets the job done and records adequately, but if you plan to use it for anything other than Skype I'd say go for a $50 USB mic. The onboard camera is nice. The tracking rate was actually better than I thought. It can definitely get the job done for a Skype situation. If you plan to use it as your main source for tracking YouTube videos, I'd say invest them into a decent camera/audio arrangement. Video Games/Media - I played Hearthstone today and I have to say I was very impressed. I didn't notice any slowdown even with multiple apps open. Ok I know it's not the hardest game out there but the touchpad functionality does was nice. The speakers are great. I was really impressed with the amount of non-suckage it contained. I normally run the speakers at 80% so they last a lifetime and don't peak. Still, it has plenty of power and could set the mood into every room. Skyrim -Ok I know it's an older game but Steam has a great modding community that has helped keep this game fresh and graphically relevant. I was able to play this game with medium Run settings. On these settings it ran smoothly and was able to include depth of field and other effects like fog and shadows. On high settings I got a noticeable slowdown. If you're looking for something to run the latest games I'd say go for it to a better laptop. But it's fine for me. I plan on playing the games I can't get on PS4 via PC. I think there will be no problems running the latest Counter-Strike, Undertale or Diablo 3 hardware .I would rate it maybe an 8.3/10 - give or take a few points for my little annoyances or my old habitual inability to change.I can safely say I will be happy with this product, and it will definitely get me through the next 3-4 years if I upgrade.
